  • Betting?

early testing shows wow this thing still works from a cd try me load.  and better than the full on load that’s crashing.  so there is hope for this to be repairable by flinging out the old os.  asus k501 laptop that is. with nowingly failing sound card as in it wont switch to headphones only from speakers when headphones are inserted.  as this is a motherboard inclusive thing it’s not really repairable it’s a new machine type thing.  but  it can run better than two minutes a page load and 10 pages maybe before crash

I thus Ill get the os of my choosing likely a different linux flavor this time that may forever simply just run the machine I know that means slower startup but this only needs to internet appliance lite office project.   nothing fancy I’m not feeling fancy.

    - thus I can order my part for the old desktop which is an old dell optiplex e521 that for a short time had 4.8 gb memory til the powersupply went and torched half of that and perhaps overheated the processor as it was real real pokey before it turned off never to turn on again… no illusions here it’s worth a shot to see if it can run as it has at half speed a speedier way of editing pictures than this laptop it cant technically beat.  and a crapton of disney movies and anime that i can not replace easily or at all.  yes expensive try at 40 ish to see if it can work when a 20 drive caddy would solve the old files stuck there problem.  but again if it can work :D why not have two machines for less that the price of one new to me refurbished?

there is no garuntees in electronic fiddling but two internet capable machines the desktop being in my basement meaning if it works again it is online capable and a tv card away from cable television for the while one does one’s washing.

all for less than a newly refurbished machine :D

    asus k501 parts:

a dvd blank forrunning a new os installation 2 bucks maybe.

    any store  including walmart.

    dell e521 part

sabrent tv tuner pci card 19,99 newegg.com

    IF

this part, a power supply at 310 watts glug glug the electricity revitaiizes a functional computer  even if this is NOT the part broke I know it was seriously failing prior to the machine not working.

    repair summary

    15 plus shipping

at roughly 8 bucks shipping  for 3 parts not 2 or 24 bucks plus 2 in blank media to get a neew os onto the machines, plus a tv card and remote!  and powersupply I’m looking at ~65 bucks a newly refurbished machine is 100 typically.  cuss me the try! two drive caddies would cost about 35 plus tax one for the old 5.25 half height of a desktop and the 2.5 size for a laptoptop thus gambling that I get more this way for 2 machines maybe to work and thus a year of safe cheap interneting or halving to swap parts buy cables and crap and having to recycle the old shit. a small cost but an annoying trip.

    -

question is, would you gamble 2:1 it can work buying a newly refurbished machine if you lose?  this assumes you aren’t scared of twiddling a screwdriver which I’m not overly,  and all best diagnosises lead one to this conclusion?

the upshot is that this gives me a pvr the only asshole in the house that can record television :D .  drawback is i both failu I’m out that and a month of easy computing.  oh well spring is coming even a walk wouldnt kill me

  • beyond me starman…  i know i pay more for my macs…  but i don’t have those problems…  even with watching vital news reports- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/26/melissa-king-miss-delaware-teen-usa-porn-video_n_2768478.html

  • oh ‘betting’…  i thought you said ‘petting…’

  • Hmmm. What would I do? Gimme a sec…

I’d buy me a steak the size of a house cat, a potato as big as a full term infant, some sour cream, a fifth of Jack Daniel’s, a new pack of cigarettes, a condom, and a Powerball ticket. Then I’d eat good and hope like hell that both the lottery ticket and the condom served their highest of purposes. The next morning, whether post-coital, wealthy, hungover, or any or no combination of the three, I’d heave the broken computers right out the stinking window.

But then I’m very rational, and deliberate in my actions.

  • I’m not a gambler myself but the walk sounds very inviting

  • @xplorrn -If i count cost of ownership and it’s a computer, toshiba t1100 dos machine with screen reader cost aroun five grand at purchase I didn’t make and lasted seventueen years for about 22 and change a month cost of ownership the cheapest of any computer I’ve owned and the longest lasting…it was custom made.  the most expensive computer i owned was a used mac which lasted a good spel but sad mac’d and at that time it wasn’t economic to repair…main culprit was a lack of legal operating system not available except at retail price and thus prohibitive to purchase along with repairs needed….to it’s credit though showed all faults prior to failure and worked as advertised far better than any machine period….but was the higher end of the machines I’ve owned for real world cost per month ownership.    the second high ticket computer was a bell and whistling dell laptop thatalso was low cost but less seccussful than thetoshiba custom made with high cost repairs and lots of them but lasted well.  the cheap pair of sneaker mileage computers toshiba and this asus at 300 and 4000 a piece lasted less than a year in my use apiece3 but were repairable in their times so far. but just dye faster…and the preverbial ductape is expensive neough…. not bad machines nor values but nothing like a machintosh.  but overall  the machine that beats them all was a webtv intenet appliance not techincally a computer at all lol that despite high cost required to operate monthly sevice was the most valuable machine i ever owned bar one as it could and did get my mom online.  a mac required double the steps and was 1000 times as useful but scared my mom off for lack of automation and simplicity.  after a few years with a web tv my mother bought a pc laptop and has been online sinc e.  it cost3 bucks a month more than the dos machine never online in my use and 2 dollars a month more than the expensive fancy laptop of many repairs but was thee simplest and best value of machine far more robust.  so in short scientifically and for me macs are very desirable and for me always will be a prize of ownership but in true are shit value compared to even crappy toyss level computers.    that surprises me and is seemingly unfair but the truth of my experience.

  • @HappierHeathen - I’m sensing purchase something ultimately logical and valuable out of you but your comment makes me laugh none the same :D   I will endevour to utilize the value of your words and probably fail but you can take sollace in the fact you told me so :D

  • @mlbncsga - lol.  okay thenthe mild annoyance of computer reservation to endure but all in a room of magical ideas and comfy chairs. for you  imagine now today boots advisable as there is slush and snow in shadier spots. the walk it four blocks east west which aren’t mathmatically eactly half the north south blocks but seem to equate…one block either or north or south to the bus point and 10 minutes of a minor wait and 29 minutes then from the library goal.
you will pass around a moutains view blues of the distance or sometimes a more cobalt blue which is to some purple …mountains majesty….amber waves of grain… as seen through a beer glass.  yeah.  you will weave a maze around a bridge reminiscent in shape to the old bridges of your youth now far prettier of archietecture but there is something of the magic of what was before. all about a circular walk with sometimes a fountain. to walk in the city building with again that echo of official magjesties as you step across stone in a tall alcove yes but room 2 stories ish tall.
you may encounter smells as well of fresh air ripe with icey snows or wish to not remember the riper still who left sans showered.  you may delight in a rare breeze of coffee most delightful or that of the asian fast food sushi place.  perhaps you may even cuss a deisle smoke breeze. or cacaphony symphony of who sat in that seat today on the buss?  the unmistakeable grandure of dusty ideas and cleaned lether seats.
you may delight in how all libraries seem to hush a person first step in the door and this place is no different.
you might even extend your journey to theeateries about the area or perhaps catch the free shuttle to the main drag so as to get ahold of your coffee parr exelence. perhaps an independant game shop where I know he has a trainnee board for cribbage instruction/two player only scoring…which is? in the shape of a toilet seat ;) hahahaha.  you may delight in either the hobby store or the big lots discount home wares storesfor novel nifty stuff that gets a person yelled at for spanking the budget :D   or womp…walmart shopping where what we need is reasonably there and affordable.  you may wish to sit in the empty mini ampitheater and dream of the silly city shows of less merit than a pbs special but city sanitary family…and dream of the spectacles of day’s before.
you may walk up the stairs across a bridge to the mountain found again and the trin to downtown or out of town.  and hope to spi the real tracks carrying a coal train.

you may opt for wine and a discrete bush echoing laughter untoward perhaps playing wino… it is possible and the grocery store sushi edible so it can be a juxtaposition of high humor….however this is potentially illegal open container and public drunkenness tickets possible…
you may even do some banking. sexy home mortgages available for the hidden rape of fine print.
much awaits you be it the gas of fast food or lash of mid teir dining or a splash of good and bad breezes…an echo or two you can not forget and the ghosts of ideas.

  • @starmanjones - I think I’ll take the purple mountains majesty through a amber colored mug  and would you believe I just got a great pair of black high top mucking boots – am I lucky or what

  • @xplorrn - that is a national tragedy

  • I’d have taken it to repair service, or tossed it, but I’m not that good at fixing broken stuff.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - yeah – and i’d like to know why we all (at least the one’s interested enough) don’t get to share and contribute?!?

  • @starmanjones - that’s a lot of folks experiences – no doubt.  i can appreciate that – and as you have some knowledge to deal with said devices it makes sense…  to me – i just need to plug and go and i’m most comfortable with mac…

  • @mlbncsga - yes, yes you are. :D   stomp and a beer :D

  • @moniet - a general lesson is this, it’s 150 typically for just looking at a problem fix or no fix…of course this is waved with any fix of course but when it’s 200 ish per fix and the new machine is 250?  it makes it rather difficult to justify a repair and doubly hard when it’s 100 ish to start with a working garunteed replacement….used of course.  now knowin how to swap a keyboard and or memory and or simple cards in and out means i can keep MY machine longer not collect garbagef replacements.  :D …remember the places that recycle crap electronics?  usually aren’t the same place selling the garunteed to work replacements so one has to make a odious second trip usually the second day lol to sort that stuff out.  vacumme cleaners are about 70 along with microwaves which oddly enough cost the same new  and televisions are 100 to 150..thus this truly is the age if it works great show me this or sandford and song here we come :D as it is near impossible to make much of a profit fast on fixing things unless you got paid to get the trash and sell a part.    such is why it’s no longer the age that lasts but the age of toss replace.

  • @xplorrn - I wanted to be actually fair about the why.. I mean I can’t tell you how much I’d love STILL to own a mac it is a badge of pride or like I’m instantly someone with sophistication and taste… but so far it’s just memories for me as I’m inbetween the convincing others of that value with their choices that could help me and I am not quite there with that purchasing power. ;)

  • @xplorrn - hey I’ve dissected that tape and I am not sure it’s her.
